Reasons For Getting Skin Fungus And How To Prevent It
When you hear the word mold, you might think of fungus growing on wet logs, mildew, mildew, or mildew growing on the back of your refrigerator. These are probably the most popular types of fungi (more than one), but did you know that there are up to 1.5 million types of fungi and only about 300 of them cause disease in humans?
Mushrooms grow by releasing tiny spores (think plant seeds) into the air. These spores can land on your skin or be inhaled. Certain damp, cool, and dark areas such as construction sites, demolition sites, old barns, and dark caves have higher concentrations of airborne fungal spores.
What is a yeast infection?
Fungal infections can occur in the lungs or skin, as the fungus can be inhaled or live on the skin. However, most infections do not extend beyond the skin and are referred to as "superficial." These superficial fungal infections can affect areas such as nails, skin, and hair and can be athlete's foot or vaginal yeast infections. Fungal skin infections are usually harmless and can be treated with medication.
It's important to note that most people can inhale fungal spores without becoming infected; However, people with weakened immune systems or lung disease are more likely to get yeast infections in the lungs, blood, and other organs, including the sinuses, liver, spleen, and brain. Examples of people with a weakened immune system include people with HIV/AIDS, cancer who are hospitalized, or who are taking drugs that suppress the immune system (eg, steroids, chemotherapy). Fungal infections of the blood, lungs, or other organs are called "systemic" infections and are generally more serious than superficial infections.
A common fungal infection of the skin
Tinea is a common group of skin fungal infections that affect areas like the feet, groin, and scalp. Tinea infections are easily transmitted from person to person by touching an infected person or by touching surfaces where the fungus is present (eg, shower floors, swimming pools, locker rooms). Some yeast infections are caused by Candida, a type of yeast. It can affect the skin, mouth, throat, and genitals. It particularly occurs in warm and humid areas such as armpits, under the breasts, behind the knees and in the groin area.
Here are some common surface fungal infections.
